General info, Litter, food, and care
Litter pan size for kittens search on Amazon the Van Ness Cat pan tall litter pan or short litter pan do not recommend automatic litter pans. Recommend scooping any time you can! Cats love a clean litter box! Any type of steel or plastic scooper will do!
We recommend Microchip and keeping your cat indoors is the best recommendation against your pet staying safe from wildlife and will help your pet to be returned if lost or stolen, if there is a next vaccine due when you pick up … I will let you know the schedule and type of vaccine needed… Please do not vaccinate your kitten with a Feline Leukemia vaccine it is harmful to purebred cats and can be fatal. We recommend you
Keep the new kitten on the same diet for at least 2 months after adopting.
After a male is 12 months old we recommend this...but please always talk to your vet before switching diet...Our recommendations diet for a male is to be extremely low in magnesium especially required for unaltered boys. I rarely have seen bladder blockage in neutered boy kitties, but Crystals or stones may block any males anatomy
Blocked bladder or Cystitis syndrome can lead to long term bladder condition w/pain or if severe crystal blockage/stones can be fatal for the cat if left untreated by a Veterinarian If cat cannot urinate see the veterinarian promptly.
If you like feeding a raw meat diet... as it can be helpful to their overall health....please contact Dena, Representative for Blue Ridge Beef Co. I feed kitten grind for cats. Dena only provides service for Colorado spgs & Metro area… I occasionally find a grocery store hamburger that is 94-96% lean for cats in small amounts 3-5 ounces is fine twice per day Contact info Email Dena@firstsourcepetfoods.com Another representative is Carissa Altshulz in Dallas area Carissa is on Face book.
Can food is ok, but to much can produce loose stool...feed ½ can 2-4 times per day if not feeding the raw meat diet. My cats usually like chicken mousse style by Royal Canin Mother and baby
If you feed the raw meat one serving a palm size twice per day helps keep weight on
Keep dry food out for free feeding. Cats like to eat small meals throughout the day. The dry food I feed kitten’s is Royal Canin Mother and baby dry kibble if that one is available as Royal canin has been experiencing product shortages for the last 3 years...if I can't find the Royal Canin I will go to this brand Purina healthy one kitten or Acana chicken and turkey dry food, it's a new food a dry food I decided to try due to product shortages and my kittens do like it….all the foods are sold from Chewy.com
If you want to switch when your kitten is older I recommend,
For Females Royal Canin Persian
Or Royal Canin Indoor formula
For males I prefer raw meat diet and only PH balanced grain free , magnesium free dry food by Iams Urinary health (dark pink bag) sold at Petsmart. Some people feed the brand Orijen chicken dry food.
Safety tips....keep toilet lids and washer/dryer doors closed down. Kittens under 6-8 mo. do not understand height and may jump from an area that is 20 ft. high! Many types of catnip toys are a favorite!! Balls with bells inside them!! Mylar type of toys can be dangerous if ingested... so can fuzz from fuzzy type of toys. Feathers on a stick are a favorite... please supervise! A small cat tree 4 ft. for kittens learning the tree is a good height.
Shampoo every 4-8 weeks my favorite shampoo Quadruped Tearless shampoo (Amazon) for dogs and cats
1st step of shampooing, apply Groomers goop in small amounts in many oily spots behind ears, tail, paws, legs underneath the belly, inside legs, let it sit for 2-3 mins. Rinse very well with warm water… be sure water gets down to her skin next you want to use another degreasing type shampoo Suave Clarifying or Pantene or Aussie all good brands of the Quadruped all-purpose tearless yuca plant based… for dogs and cats. If your cat’s skin is irritated or itchy... shampoo with a Miconazole shampoo or Chlorhexidine shampoo every 7 days warm summer months are the times cats can get itchy skin.
Eye care: Use the saline solution that is for sensitive eyes sold at Walmart. This solution is good for flushing hair or debris from the eye...over the counter dry eye drops are very good for dry symptoms. If you see any yellow or green in your cat's eye you will need to get Terramycin eye ointment from Newegg.com or fatmansdoghouse.com it works well on eye infections use ¼ in. strip in affected eye 3-4 times per day use 7-10 days
Combing frequently a few times per week helps the coat stay healthy and knot free! I buy combs from www.3daypetsupply.com it’s called a Greyhound 7 ½ inch coarse/fine tooth grooming comb.
Amazon has some knock off combs but they will not last as long as a Greyhound Comb as they are the best!
Clean ears with an Alcohol prep pad to get out wax.
Clean eyes with sensitive saline solution contact sterile OTC type from walmart is fine with cosmetic cotton rounds
If dry eye symptoms occur I use dry eye relief drops 4-6 times per day from Walmart
If severe dry eye symptoms occur in very dry months I purchase Terramycin eye ointment adminster to corner of the eye each day 2-4 times per day for 10-14 days it’s sold online at www.newegg.com and fatman’s doghouse website.
Pet Dryer: My favorite is B-Air...always dry your pet entirely after their bath. We recommend the Tidy cat litter clumping style litter, or the most dust free litter available some cats will not change litters and do prefer the tidy cat one...we use a water fountain called catit stainless steel flower design sold on Amazon. Please only use ceramic or stainless steel food or water bowls for your kitten /cat Another pet dryer I use is The flying Pig with the stand I love to comb the kitten under the dryer (Amazon)
Any other questions feel free to ask. For show cats I recommend shampoo’s and conditioners by Pink Paw Pal products sold by some folks in the USA on Facebook. Do not use conditioner day of the show… only use it when your doing pre-show bath. Another conditioner I use is Argan hair packets sold on Amazon leave on for 15 minutes. Always rinse very well. Supplements: if you want to try adding these supplements I recommend daily L-lysine powder or gel added to food or adminstered in the mouth. An Omega oil 3's and 6" s make help with allergies and overall health.
Enjoy your kitten :-)
Thank you very much for helping us with our love and support of the breed
